I Dub Thee Doctor Doom
Today was Dashiell's one month pediatrician visit, mostly to monitor his head circumference and also to check weightgain and all that. This is the second time that Dashiell's been checked out by Dr. Liz, and it's the second time she's managed to make my stomach feel like it's weighted with a block of lead.
Today she listened to his chest and announced he has a heart murmur. And when he cries, as he did a bit in the office, it seems he goes a bit blue around the mouth, which might be a form of cyanosis, though I will say that I've never noticed that happening before, and he doesn't really cry all that much... fussy, sure, but crying not too much thankfully.
With the news of the murmur did come the information that about 50% of kids have a perfectly harmless murmur. However, she still wants us to go see a cardiologist to get it checked out. So this Saturday we'll be back at the Northern Westchester Hospital having his heart checked out.
The potential cyanosis mostly involves us having to watch him that he breathes okay and for any instances of him turning blue.
I've gotten to the point already where I wonder if pediatricians enjoy giving people doom and gloom scenarios.
As for the rest of his check-up, he's still on his curve for his head circumference, even though it's in the 5th percentile and he now weighs 8lb12oz, so he's almost a whole pound and a half up from his birth weight. The weightgain is also good news in relation to the heart murmur and stuff... if he had any real problems he wouldn't be thriving and gaining weight like he has been. So that's a relief at least. His weight is the 15th percentile, which is also why they're not worrying too much about his head at this juncture too... it's not like there's a huge discrepancy between the percentile he's in for his head and for his weight, so nothing disproportionate.
