2 Month Well Baby

Tuesday we had Dashiell's 2 month well baby visit, so he got weighed and measured and checked out and all that jazz. He's currently 9lb10oz, which does mean he's fallen off his growth chart curve somewhat, but the pediatrician didn't seem concerned, and in fact didn't even mention it... we noticed because we're charting his growth at home as well. He's still over 2lbs over his birth weight, and he'll not be 2 months until next Wednesday. It's odd really because he'd been eating a lot all week, and he'd been weighed at the cardiologist too, where he was 9lb7oz. While I realise there can be a discrepancy between scales, I had expected his weight gain to be more than just 3oz that week.

Dr. Nick didn't really seem concerned about the green poo, which I brought up. As long as there's no blood in it. I'm still cutting out a lot of dairy, and trying to cut it out entirely, and I will start cutting out other things too if it doesn't get better in 2-3 weeks when the cow's milk proteins should have gotten out of my system. He does occasionally have the yellow poos, but too much is green for my liking, plus it means he's more gassy which is never good because it keeps or wakes him up. I think wheat might be the second thing to get the axe after dairy, seeing as that's the ingredient I can remember being in the foods I've eaten before he's had green poop.

While we were there his "simian crease" came up and Dr. Nick recommended a geneticist that he did residency under. So we now have an appointment next Wednesday to go have Dash checked out. The simian crease is one part of the reason to go see the geneticist, as is the size of his head. He's on the low end of the scale in regards to his head circumference, something like the fifth percentile, but then seeing as his weight's been between the 10th and 25th percentiles since his birth it's not like his head is abnormally small for his body. I'm sure the fact that he had a large frontal fontanelle and a more slanted forehead initially (a lot of that's gone away) also factored into this decision, even though the ultrasound showed he was fine and the one half of the thyroid test that could be performed, and the usual newborn bloodwork, also showed nothing untoward. And then of course his heart murmur, patent ductus arteriosis and the other little valve issue, more things that were probably part of the decision.

Even if Dr. Nick hadn't brought it up, I would have, it was on the list to bring up at the visit, he just broached it first. I just want to have this checked out. The simian crease can occur in 1 in 30 "normal" people, but it's also often an indicator of various syndromes in concjunction with various other symptoms. From the ones I've seen that are associated with it, he doesn't share any of the other characteristics or symptoms, so I have ruled most of those out in my own mind, but I'd like the security of knowing that it isn't an indicator of something else. Or, if it is indicative of something, then at least we'll know that too. I have no idea what a visit with a geneticist will encompass. It's only me that's going, and they didn't say that PreZ needed to come along too, but maybe they ascertain whether that's necessary for a future visit or tests when we're there. We'll see.

The geneticist works at the children's hospital, which is down the road from us, so a lot closer than the hospital near our pediatrician, which is about 11 miles away. There's another hospital closer to us, but we went with this pediatrician's office based on recommendations from people who said this doctor's office would be in line with what we were looking for. And so far I have no complaints... they're very thorough, which I appreciate even if it does mean that you end up worrying when they find something that needs checking out, like the potential hypothyroidism and his murmur. They've also been supportive of the breastfeeding, with nary a formula poster to be seen in the office. One of the peds there is a doctor of osteopathy, they've been very good about listening to our views and respecting our choices, even if they might have been contrary to their own. Even other doctors have recommended, or commended, the ped's office... like the audiologist I went to a few weeks ago for his hearing test. Always good to know that other people think that the practice is a good one.

I think his next well baby visit's around 4 months, they didn't mention that I needed to make a new appointment, but I'm sure they'll call around the time it's necessary, as they did with this visit.
