7 Weeks
The past week has been pretty rough. While Dashiell did give me a few nights where he slept for a long overall stretch even though it was interspersed with feedings, which are a lot easier now that I've kind of mastered the side-lying method of feeding, even though falling asleep that way can really make my back ache when I wake up later, he also gave me some very fussy days or evenings where no matter what you tried he'd not settle down. Those are the days that I want to hand him off to PreZ as soon as he walks in the door just for some sanity time.
He's seven weeks today, so it's probably attributable to his six week growth spurt, because he is feeding more too.
Monday he had his check-up with the pediatric cardiologist. The murmur still sounds the same, and so no progress. His EKG was fine though, so his heart and lungs and stuff aren't overcompensating for the problem, which is good. He weighed in at 9lb7oz, so plenty of weight gain, and up 2lb1oz from his birth weight. Had his heart condition been giving him problems, he wouldn't be gaining weight and he'd be considered "failing to thrive". We'll have his next cardiologist check-up in about 3-4 weeks... hopefully there will be some progress, because I'd like for this to close naturally rather than needing medication or worse.
This afternoon Sakina came over for the 6 week post-partum visit, so I got an internal exam and Dashiell got to be held and cooed over. My cervix is closed and uterus back where it belongs and back to the size it should be. The post-partum bleeding ended at around 2.5 weeks or so, so that hasn't been an issue for a while. I'm going to book an appointment with a chiropractor soon though, because if I sleep on my side I wake up fairly regularly with my pelvis or pubic bone aching and hurting, and I think a rather important bunch of nerves is being pinched, because I've had an unpleasant sensation on and off since birth. I had thought it would go away and that it was a direct and temporary result of birth, but it seems not. I'll probably end up booking PreZ in for a visit too because he could use his back looked at, and get them to see Dash at the same time as well... there' s a chiropractor that I found on the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association website that lives in the next town who is also covered under our insurance plan, so I know they deal with pregnant women, babies and post-partum mamas.
Because Dashiell has been pooping a bunch of green(er) poops than normal for a couple of days and some mucousy ones, I'm going to try cutting out a lot of dairy for the next 2-3 weeks, to see if that clears it up. He seems to be very gassy and crabby because of the gas. As well as a loud farter. Seeing as cow's milk proteins seem to be the most common offender, I'll give that the 2-3 weeks it needs to clear out of my system to see if it makes a difference. I'll also be running this by his pediatrician, with whom we have an appointment next week.
Other than that he likes to be awake all the time, and likes me to hold him or sling him all the time he's awake. It's frustrating not having any time to do anything... I thought babies were supposed to nap at times during the day? Why does mine seem to wake up within 5 minutes of being put down if he falls asleep in our arms/on us? Argh!
Hopefully his sleep schedule will normalise, to some degree, soon.
